June 28, 2013

On a dreary Wednesday, some of the members of this very active Garden Club came to visit the conifer garden at John Monroe’s home in Indian Lake NY. For almost 20 years he has been planting cultivars of Spruce, PInes, Junipers, Firs and Larches in this zone 3 climate. After viewing almost 50 specimens, the members of the club were asked to name their favorite and why. The winners were: PIcea abies ‘Virgata’, Abies concolor ‘Blue Cloak, PInus banksiana ‘pendula’, Larix ‘ varied directions’, PIcea glauca ‘dent’, Picea glauca ‘pendula’. and PInus resinosa ‘ morel’. The club was given a 3 gal Picea engelmannii ‘snake’ to raffle or plant as they chose.
