Yellow Southern Catalpa

Yellow Southern Catalpa is a wonderful tree for spring color. In our hot summers, the color does fade to green but for a number of weeks the leaves are outstanding. I’ve heard some cut this tree down to the ground every spring and encourage strong vigorous shoots with even larger leaves to punctuate the perennial or mixed border. This sounds like a technique worth trying. Like the other Catalpas, the catalpa worm may find this tree and in a matter of a few days totally defoliate the tree. This doesn’t seem to hurt the tree much as in several weeks time it will re flush and become full again. It is propagated from cuttings under mist during late spring and summer.
