Acer palmatum Katsura

Since it was a cloudy Saturday I thought it might be a good time to take some pictures of the nursery and the Japanese Maples many of which area showing their wonderful spring colors. Most people are familar with the red or purplish red Japanese Maples – Bloodgood being a good tree and example. And the Laceleafs are always popular as the delicate foliage is just fun to look at and the shapes of the laceleafs fit in well with many landscapes. However, not many people are as familiar
with the ‘yellow orange leaved maples. Examples are Acer palmatum Katsura, and Acer palmatum ‘Orange Dream’. Both of these varieties open early in the spring with brilliant colors – yellow or orange. Over time, the colors fade in intensity, but still remain a lighter color than surrounding foliage all during the summer months. Fall color is in the yellow to golden range.
