Picea abies ‘virgata’ – Snake Spruce

Picea abies 'Virgata'

This interesting cultivar of the Norway spruce ( Picea abies) has long shoots with few side buds and few apical buds as well. The result is an odd growing, sparsely branched large tree. The effect is dramatic when the shoots are seen against the sky. This is a tree that I have grown in Indian Lake NY for about six years. It is about 12 ft tall now.
