Cryptomeria japonica 'Elegans'

Cryptomeria japonica ‘Elegans’ The Plume Cryptomeria is an unusual form that has juvenile foliage that turns a pleasing purple brown in the winter. The foliage greens up just as soon as the weather warms up. This small tree will grow to about 15 ft in 15 years. It has a bushy habit and is moderate in its rate of growth. It could be placed anywhere that the dark foliage in winter would be set off. There is another cultivar “Elegans aurea’ that looks very similar but the foliage stays light green during the winter. In some ways, young ‘elegans aurea’s resemble the tropical Norfolk Island pine in its habit.
