“Melody’ Hinoki Cypress

November 8, 2009

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Melody'

is a slow growing Hinoki cypress that is a worthy addition to the Hinoki collection. It is quite different from other cultivars and when there are so many culitivars that is quite an accomplishment. Melody has ‘netted’ foliage—meaning that the tissue of the fans of foliage are separated from each other in an attractive manner. The foliage is yellow in full sun, and more of a limey yellow in shadier sites. It grows a mere one inch or two a year. This plant naturally grows in an upright pyramidal form. Propagation is by hardwood cuttings in the winter with hormone, mist and bottom heat.
