Pinus thunbergii 'Ogon' -- Yellow Japanese Black Pine

Pinus thunbergii 'Ogon' -- Yellow Japanese Black Pine

Pinus thunbergii ‘Ogon’ (‘aurea’) is the yellow needled form of the Japanese Black Pine. This tree has attractive yellowish needles in the summer and fall and with colder weather, the needles turn even more yellow. The tree grows more slowly than the species and can be used effectively in the home landscape or conifer garden. Japanese Black pines are sometimes pruned in the Japanese style – ‘hindu pan’ and this cultivar can be treated that way. Japanese Black pines are salt tolerant and are appropriate for a seaside location. The tree is not especially long lived but the effectiveness of the long needles make this tree very worthy for the garden even if it may not be around for a particularly long time. It is propagated by grafting.
