Two excellent low growing Junipers

June 19, 2009

Sometimes a low growing juniper is just what is needed for a container or rock garden. Preferring full to mostly sun, junipers can be grown on the dry side, once established. Spider mites can sometimes  be a problem, but if caught early an infestation can easily be controlled, Two cultivars of Junperus horizontalis that we especially like are ‘Pancake ‘ and ‘Golden Carpet’. ‘Pancake is a blue gray color and lays flat along the ground unless staked (to create a small tree). ‘Golden Carpet’ has a nice bright yellow color, not too bright to make it hard to use in thegarden, and although slow growing, it has performed better than some of the other yellow horizontalis cultivars. Another plus  is that neither of these great plants is patented.
