Acer palmatum Shishigashira

May 15, 2009

A couple from Raleigh came in today with photos of a Japanese style garden they have been working on. There already is a fence on one side, a gravel walk and a stone lantern. They had spotted a Japanese Maple – Acer palmatum Shishigashira – the Lions Head Maple. they liked and came to our nursery to inspect what we had to offer. We had a selection of smaller trees, one specimen in a 60 gal pot and one huge specimen. They chose a smaller, nicely branched tree and paired it with a Hosta ‘Twist of Lime’. This hosta having smaller strap leaves with light green and dark green edges will be in the correct scale for the Lions Head Maple. The wife, having farmed for much of her life, enjoyed the barns and the adaptive reuse of the old farmstead buildings. Of course, these were exactly the same features that drew me to this property 26 years ago! Although they said several times, that they had had a wonderful experience here, I already knew it, by their reactions.
